Arising from behavioral therapy (Lewinsohn, Jacobson), it engages the patient in adaptive activities, consistent with their values, to counter inertia and behavioral avoidance. By increasing engagement in rewarding activities that are a source of pleasure and mastery, it aims primarily at reducing depressive symptoms.
