Developed by Paul Gilbert, compassion-focused therapy treats pathological shame, severe self-criticism, and self-disgust. Rather than restructuring cognitive content, it aims at emotional regulation by voluntarily activating the soothing system. It is indicated for depression, post-traumatic stress, and anxiety marked by self-criticism.
