Ontstaan aan het Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto beschouwt zij psychologische problemen niet als geïsoleerd maar als het product van een familiaal of sociaal systeem. Ze richt zich op de interacties en de dynamiek van het systeem in plaats van op het individu op zichzelf genomen. Haar bevoorrechte domeinen zijn relatietherapie, gezinstherapie en het verbeteren van de communicatie.
