Kashmir Tantrism (Trika, Abhinavagupta)
Authentic Kashmir Tantrism is a non-dualist path of liberation, founded on the recognition (Pratyabhijna) of the ultimate nature of consciousness as Shiva: absolute, free, luminous, vibratory (spanda) and reflexive consciousness. Called a direct or abrupt path, it aims not at gradual perfecting but at the immediate recognition of the identity of the empirical subject with the absolute consciousness Shiva-Shakti. Suffering is analyzed there as the product of a misapprehension (the malas) whose dissipation entails its cessation; in this enlarged sense, the Trika constitutes an existential, even ontological, therapeutics. Its practice draws notably on the 112 dharanas of the Vijnana Bhairava Tantra, the transformation bearing on the very structure of experience and not only on symptoms.
